Assessing Meaningful Learning

This week topic is about assessing meaningful learning. The resources that I learned about this week was a resource called the quizzer tool. This tools allow teacher to create a power point over the topic area that they are going over. This can be used as a review assessment and also a way for the student to interact with in the classroom. The way that this works is that a student is able to use their phone, tablet while in the classroom. The teacher may display a question in the board and it’s up to the teacher on how they would like for them to answer it. Once the question is pop up. This allows student to send a simple text with their answer to the designated number. Then teacher can see the results from what the students answered. The other tool that we discussed was the Inspiration/Kidspiration Software. This software allow for students to brainstorm their ideas in whatever way works for them. It also allows them to organize it once they put all their ideas into a form where the can present this.


Saying this I think that both tools are great tools to use. Though I do not think that I would be using the Inspiration/Kidspariation Software at all because I can see this being use more in a English classroom. When the student struggle to come up with a creative way to start or gather all their ideas to write an essay. Saying that I am sure there are way a teacher can incorporate this into a math class if one tries. The Quizzer tool I really like! I can already think of ways I could incorporate this into a math classroom. I could use this a warm-up or a closure to see if the student understand the topic. It will also allow students to have hands-on with activities with technology.

Technology Application Standards

§111.39. Algebra I, Adopted 2012 (One Credit).

(a)  General requirements. Students shall be awarded one credit for successful completion of this course. This course is recommended for students in Grade 8 or 9. Prerequisite: Mathematics, Grade 8 or its equivalent.
(b)  Introduction.
(1)  The desire to achieve educational excellence is the driving force behind the Texas essential  knowledge and skills for mathematics, guided by the college and career readiness standards. By embedding statistics, probability, and finance, while focusing on fluency and solid understanding, Texas will lead the way in mathematics education and prepare all Texas students for the challenges they will face in the 21st century.
(2)  The process standards describe ways in which students are expected to engage in the content. The placement of the process standards at the beginning of the knowledge and skills listed for each grade and course is intentional. The process standards weave the other knowledge and skills together so that students may be successful problem solvers and use mathematics efficiently and effectively in daily life. The process standards are integrated at every grade level and course. When possible, students will apply mathematics to problems arising in everyday life, society, and the workplace. Students will use a problem-solving model that incorporates analyzing given information, formulating a plan or strategy, determining a solution, justifying the solution, and evaluating the problem-solving process and the reasonableness of the solution. Students will select appropriate tools such as real objects, manipulatives, paper and pencil, and technology and techniques such as mental math, estimation, and number sense to solve problems. Students will effectively communicate mathematical ideas, reasoning, and their implications using multiple representations such as symbols, diagrams, graphs, and language. Students will use mathematical relationships to generate solutions and make connections and predictions. Students will analyze mathematical relationships to connect and communicate mathematical ideas. Students will display, explain, or justify mathematical ideas and arguments using precise mathematical language in written or oral communication.
(3)  In Algebra I, students will build on the knowledge and skills for mathematics in Grades 6-8, which provide a foundation in linear relationships, number and operations, and proportionality. Students will study linear, quadratic, and exponential functions and their related transformations, equations, and associated solutions. Students will connect functions and their associated solutions in both mathematical and real-world situations. Students will use technology to collect and explore data and analyze statistical relationships. In addition, students will study polynomials of degree one and two, radical expressions, sequences, and laws of exponents. Students will generate and solve linear systems with two equations and two variables and will create new functions through transformations.
(4)  Statements that contain the word "including" reference content that must be mastered, while those containing the phrase "such as" are intended as possible illustrative examples.


Though I am not sure exactly yet what area in math I would like to teach I went to look at the TEKS and decided to look at the algebra for the purpose of this week assignment.  After reading the introduction of the TEKS in which gives a brief summary any teacher in Texas is expected to teach student at the appropriate grade level. It helped me understand what exactly the objective I would intend the student to get by the last day that they are in my classroom. Reading this TEKS, can be very useful for teacher especially new teacher to help give a guideline to what is expected to teach. Saying that I plan to use the TEKS for the subject finally decide to teach as guideline, to create a lesson plan for the students. It will help me make sure that i am not having a lesson in which the student will not learn anything from it.

Therefore the TEKS, I would say are very important for a teacher to look at because its a guideline. Reading the TEKS, I thought that most were self explanatory, looking though i was thinking in the perspective of when I was in school and took that subject. Had to go back and read it again but this time through a perspective of a future teacher. As i read this I thought to my self out of all of this which one do I think will be important that i would like my future student to get. Even if the only thing that they get through out the semester or the year. The one that stood out the most to me was the part where it says that student will connect math problem to the real world to draw out solution. I think that this is important because if they can make the connection to the real world then it will be easier for them to understand the subject. It will also make it easier to learn and understand that they are not just memorizing random number for no reason.
